FDA Conducts Compliance Checks, Cites 1,200 Retailers

The Food and Drug Adminstration recently cited more than 1,200 retailers (including household names such as CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreen) with warnings for the illegal sale of tobacco products to consumers below the age of 18. (Store workers are required by law to demand identification from anyone who appears younger than 27 years olds.)

During their compliance operation, FDA inspectors made 27,500 undercover checks, resulting in hundreds of warnings to retailers—the warning letters were recently posted online. Repeat offenders may face fines or lose their ability to sell tobacco.
